It doesn't have to be Halloween in order for you to enjoy a good horror movie. Although these type of movies may not be for everyone, a large number of people love a good scare. We all have our own list of favorites, both classic horror movies and new horror movies. Here is a list of my top horror movies.
10. Psycho(1960)
When you think of the movie Psycho, the first image that comes to mind is the famous shower scene. Norman Bates will keep you guessing as the young man who runs the Bates Motel and lives in the big house on the hill with his mother. This Alfred Hitchcock classic is some of the best work ever done.
9. Hellraiser(1987)
Hellraiser was writer/director Clive Barker's first film. This movie is about a puzzle box that when solved unleashes three demons known as cenobites who believe that pain is a source of pleasure. One of their captured souls manage to escape their grasp and manages to regenerate by killing others. This movie is original and ground breaking as far as pushing the envelope.
8. The Shining(1980)
Based on Stephen King's novel, The Shining takes place in a luxury hotel in a secluded mountain area that is closed during the winter months due to the snow. Jack Nicholson plays the main character, Jack Torrance who is an ex-teacher/aspiring writer that is employed by the hotel to be that caretaker for the winter along with his wife and son, Danny. Turns out that the hotel is haunted by former caretakers and guests which slowly start to drive Jack crazy. Stephen King is reported to not have liked this film version. Having read the novel, I think the film is much better. Jack brought more to the character than what was described in the novel.
7. Suspiria(1977)
This movie which is directed by Italian filmmaker Dario Argento is about a coven of witches that is hidden beneath the facade of a dance academy in Germany.
6. Night of the Living Dead(1968)
This classic movie about the walking dead, also known as zombies, was directed by George Romero. Although George Romero made many more zombie movies, this by far is the best and all I can say is, "They're coming to get you Barbara!"
5. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(1974)
This Tobe Hooper directed movie is about a group of 5 young people who on their way to a grandfathers grave encounter a chainsaw wielding psychopath and his cannibal family.
4. A Nightmare on Elm Street(1984)
Freddy Kruger is the villain in this movie directed by Wes Craven who attacks his victims in their dreams.
3. Friday the 13th(1980)
Somebody is killing off the camp counselors at Camp Crystal Lake while they are fixing the camp up to get ready to open.
2. Halloween(1978)
Michael Myers was institutionalized at the age of 6 for murdering his sister on Halloween night. Fifteen years later he escapes the asylum just before Halloween and his psychiatrist, Dr. Loomis, is determined to catch him before it's too late. This movie was directed by John Carpenter.
1. The Exorcist(1973)
This film was directed by William Friedkin and is hauntingly disturbing. A young girl becomes possessed by evil spirits after playing with an Ouija board. Her mother seeks the help of two priests to save her daughter.
